Careers in bowling

Your road from the lanes to a career

Bowling in Nigeria began in lounges and shopping malls. Since Olubunmi Gabriel introduced organised tenpin bowling in 2005 and founded the Nigeria Tenpin Bowling Federation (NTBF), it has also become a sport with a national squad. In 2010 the federation's “Star of Nigeria got Talent” programme screened 100 bowlers and recruited 27 of them into the national squad.

This page is for young Nigerians who have fallen in love with the lanes, and for the parents, teachers and centre managers who want to help them. It explains how to go from a fun night out to serious competition, the places to practise, the scholarship route for women bowlers in the United States, the jobs that exist around bowling, and what it really costs. Every figure was checked on 1 October 2026.

One honest truth before you start: there are no professional bowling careers inside Nigeria today. Even Jason Belmonte, holder of a record 15 PBA major titles, says the sport lacks money. In Nigeria, the real careers in bowling are in coaching, running and maintaining centres, organising events and, for a talented few, competing abroad while studying or working. This page shows you all of those doors.

The pathway at a glance

Six stages from first game to career

Ages are a guide. Bowling is one of the few sports you can start at almost any age.

  1. Any age

    Bowl for fun

Start at a centre with family or friends. Use a light ball and learn the basic four-step approach and the foul line.

  2. Age 10 and up

    Regular practice and lessons

Bowl every week if you can afford it, and ask the centre about leagues, coaching or youth sessions.

  3. Teenagers

    Centre leagues and tournaments

Keep your scores. A steady average is how bowlers are measured and selected.

  4. Talented bowlers

    Federation screening and national squad

The NTBF's talent programme recruited bowlers to the national squad and a youth development programme.

  5. Age 17 and up

    Study and bowl abroad

Women can bowl for one of 95 NCAA college teams in the United States; men and women can join amateur and regional events.

  6. Adults

    A career around the lanes

Coaching, centre management, technical work, event organising or, for a very few, professional tours abroad.

Step by step

Eight steps to a bowling career

Follow these in order. Each one builds on the one before it.

  1. Learn the game properly from the start

Most people pick up bad habits on their first night out. Learn the basics early: a ball you can control (beginners and children often use 6 to 10 pounds), a smooth arm swing, aiming at the arrows rather than the pins, and never stepping over the foul line. Our How to Play page explains the rules and scoring.

  2. Find a centre where you can practise

You cannot become a bowler without lanes. The biggest centres are Let's Go Bowling at The Palms in Lekki, Lagos (10 lanes), and the Dome Brunswick Bowling Centre and Trukadero City Bowl in Abuja (6 lanes each). There are also lanes in Ibadan and other parts of Lagos. See the full list on our Where to Bowl page and call ahead for opening hours and prices.

    • Ask the manager about quiet times or practice rates: serious bowlers need many games, not one.
    • Ask whether the centre runs a league, a youth session or a tournament.
  3. Keep a score book

Bowling is a numbers sport. Write down every game you bowl: the date, the centre and your score. Your average is your CV. Selectors, coaches and college teams all ask for it. A perfect game is 300, twelve strikes in a row; aim to raise your average a little every month.

  4. Get a coach, or become your own best coach

Few Nigerian centres have full-time coaches, so ask experienced bowlers to watch you, and film your approach on a phone. Jason Belmonte, who holds the record of 15 PBA major titles, says he was self-taught and never had a personal coach, and that people told him he was bowling the wrong way. Learn the fundamentals first, then find your own style.

  5. Contact the federation

The NTBF has worked with the sports commission and the ministry to arrange bowling clinics for students, youths and adults, and its talent programme fed the national squad and a National Youth Development Programme. We could not confirm the federation's contact details in 2026, so check the details on our Contact page before you rely on them. For lawn bowls, Nigeria's member of World Bowls is Bowls Nigeria, listed at the National Sports Commission in Lagos.

  6. Compete wherever you can

Enter centre leagues, company tournaments and federation events. Competition teaches you to bowl under pressure on lanes you do not know. Write down how the lanes played and what you changed; that notebook is your coach when you have none.

  7. Use bowling to open doors abroad

For talented young women, the strongest route is the US college game. The NCAA has held a women's bowling championship since 2004, and 95 college teams competed in 2025/26 across Divisions I, II and III. College teams want a strong, consistent average and good school grades. For adults abroad, the PBA Regional Tour in the United States lets members and qualifying amateurs compete in weekend events.

  8. Build a career around the lanes

Most people who make a living from bowling do it off the approach: coaching, managing a centre, maintaining lane machines, organising leagues and corporate events, or opening a centre. The section below explains each one.

Our advice: treat bowling as a passion that can pay for your education or become a business, not as a salary. Keep your studies or trade strong, and look for the jobs around the game.

Careers around the lanes

These are the careers that keep bowling alive in Nigeria and around the world. Most can be started in any city with a bowling centre.

Scholarships

Girls, women and college bowling

Bowling is one of the fairest sports for girls and women: strength matters less than accuracy, rhythm and nerve. It is also the sport with the clearest scholarship route for women:

  • The NCAA women's bowling championship has been held since 2004. In 2025/26, 39 Division I, 36 Division II and 20 Division III teams took part.
  • Jacksonville State won the 2026 title, and Nebraska is the most successful programme with six titles.
  • College coaches look for a consistent average, tournament experience and good school results, so keep your score book and your report cards.

Families should be careful with anyone who promises a “guaranteed” scholarship for a fee. Real college coaches talk to you and your school directly.

Stay safe

Safety, costs and scams

Bowling is a safe sport, but a few rules protect young bowlers and their families.

Stay safe and spend wisely

  • Use a ball you can control. Too heavy a ball strains the wrist, elbow and shoulder.
  • Never step past the foul line on to the oiled lane: it is slippery as well as a foul.
  • Wear proper bowling shoes, from the centre or your own.
  • Never pay an “agent” for a scholarship or a trial abroad. Contact colleges and federations directly.
  • Children should bowl with a parent or a trusted adult present, and coaches should never be alone with a child.
  • Bowling costs money per game: agree a budget with your family and ask centres about practice rates.

If you are selected to represent Nigeria, remember that Nigeria's National Anti-Doping Act (2025) applies the World Anti-Doping Code to athletes in Nigeria. Tell every doctor you are an athlete and check every medicine.

Advice from the stars

What the world's best bowlers want you to know

  • My advice to young people is to just be who you are. If you want something, you've got to make it happen.

The lesson: Your style can be different, as long as your scores are good.

  • The financial aspect of the game is the only thing we're lacking. I do wish we had more money.

The lesson: Plan a second income from the start, even if you become a star.

  • If I win, it's good but if I don't I still learn a lot
