Flying Eagles (Nigeria U-20)

The Flying Eagles are Nigeria’s under-20 men’s team. They have reached two FIFA U-20 World Cup finals (1989 and 2005) and won the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations seven times, a record.

Their most famous night came in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, in 1989. Trailing the Soviet Union 4-0 in the quarter-final with less than half an hour left, the Flying Eagles scored four times to draw 4-4 and won the penalty shoot-out. Nigerians still call it the Miracle of Dammam. In 2005 a team with John Obi Mikel, Taye Taiwo and Chinedu Obasi reached the final and lost narrowly to Argentina.
