A fighting art born in Nigeria
Dambe is a striking martial art of the Hausa people of northern Nigeria. It grew up among butchers and fishermen, who travelled from town to town and, at harvest festivals, challenged the local men to fight. The butchers came from a specific group in Hausa society, the only people who could ritually slaughter animals and handle meat, and Dambe became part of their identity.
The spear and the shield
A Dambe fighter strikes with one hand. The strong-side fist, wrapped in cloth and knotted cord, is called the spear. The open lead hand is the shield, used to grab, block and set up the blow. The lead leg is often wrapped in chain and used to kick and to defend.
How a bout works
Traditional bouts have three rounds with no time limit. A round ends when there is no action, when an official calls a halt, or when a fighter’s hand, knee or body touches the ground. Knocking an opponent down is called killing him.

Dambe today
Modern Dambe keeps its festival spirit, with drums, amplified music, pre-fight rituals and crowds of spectators, but it has also turned professional. Promotions such as African Warriors introduced three three-minute rounds, a points system and clearer knockdown rules, and Dambe fights now draw millions of YouTube views from outside Nigeria. In 2019 the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development pledged to set up a national league and federation. Writers who follow the sport warn that as it grows, the Hausa communities who kept it alive must keep a voice in its future.
